 Taj Mahal, Agra

One glance at the Taj and you recognize you're experiencing something surreal, other-wordly. Even after over 400 years since it had been built, this breathtaking poetry in white marble remains one among the foremost fascinating pieces of architecture ever known to mankind. When Kipling described the Taj Mahal as ‘the embodiment of all things pure’, he echoed the romance, the sweetness and therefore the glory of this masterpiece that shone brilliant on full-of-the-moon nights, and threw up an evocative reflection within the still waters of Yamuna when the sun was high. For Rabindranath Tagore, Taj was ‘a teardrop on the cheek of eternity’, and like Tagore many tourists even today find a reason to go to the Taj Mahal annually , and substitute awe before its eternal beauty.

History Of Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan within the memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal who died in 1631 while parturition to their 14th child. Mumtaz, Shah Jahan’s third wife, was known for her exceptional beauty, and therefore the emperor was known to be mad about her. Crestfallen by her overtime , the emperor, it's believed, turned grey-haired in only one night. Work on the Taj began in 1632, but it wasn’t until 1653 that the entire monument came together in its current form. But as fate would have it, soon after the Taj was built Shah Jahan was overthrown by his son Aurangazeb who held him prisoner within the Agra Fort, where he spent the remainder of his years looking for the Taj. Shah Jahan after his death in 1666 was buried beside his beloved Mumtaz within the Taj Mahal .

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 for being the “jewel of Muslim art in India and one among the universally admired masterpieces of the world’s heritage”, a military of 20,000 artisans from across India, Central Asia and Europe were employed to figure on the Taj.
